I’ll admit and say I’m not usually a fan of card games, but there was something about Nacon and Abrakam’s Roguebook that caught my attention. Maybe it was the cool looking artwork, or that Richard Garfield of Magic: The Gathering fame was behind it. Whatever it was I’m glad I took a chance with Roguebook: Deluxe Edition as it’s some of the most fun you can have in a deckbuilder, and it’s finally available on console.
via YouTubeOur own Cory Galliher reviewed the original PC release, so be sure to check out his take on the game, extensive plot and gameplay elements and the like while I go into what I got from playing. The thing that really pulled me into the gameplay is that it’s not just about building the best deck to battle with or the roguelike elements, but the fact that you can explore and expand the map you’re on.
Of course having the best deck you can along with dying/coming back roguelike style will be needed to acquire the paintbrushes and ink in order to do so, but I felt adding this simple but neat element to the gameplay was a nice touch and always gives you something to look forward to as you can uncover new cards, items that will help you out, and other stuff to spice things up.
Speaking of new things, this new deluxe edition adds a few new treats to the table in the form of new artwork and hero skins for your cards and heroes. While we’re talking about heroes, a new one has been added with Fugoro, the merchant of wonders. Players are sure to have a sweet time using his unique abilities and unlocking fifty new cards that have been added that already makes a random game even more random.
There’s also a digital art book and soundtrack added that are both pretty awesome. I was sent a review code for the PlayStation 5 version and the game looks and runs beautifully while having some pretty quick load times to boot. I’m sure it plays well on previous gen consoles as well, seeing that’s not a graphically or process intense game.
If you’re looking for the next deckbuilder to play on consoles, you’ll want to pick up Roguebook: Deluxe Edition as it has great artwork, music, and most importantly great gameplay that will have you glued in front of it for hours at a time. So get out there and shuffle these cards for some fantasy fun that come highly recommended.
