Those of us at Popzara who’ve used and reviewed Turtle Beach headsets are usually pretty happy with their lineup as they always look to push gaming-centered audio tech forward. Their past few products have been good but felt like they were sort of stuck in the rut with the same designs and specs. They must’ve picked up on this and completely changed their latest product around with the Turtle Beach Recon 500 Wired Gaming Headset that breathes new life into their lineup and into game player’s ears.

Right out of the box I was digging the new, sleek look of the Recon 500, as it looks completely different from Turtle Beach’s previous line of headsets. It also feels a lot more comfortable too, thanks to a sturdy, adjustable metal-reinforced headband and cushy memory foam ear cups cushions made from breathable fabric that also features the company’s patented ProSpecs design.

This makes these a comfort and joy to use for long periods of time for those who wear glasses. The four foot, 1.3m braided cable might be a little short for some, but it uses a 3.5mm jack for compatibility with the Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC users. This means everyone can get in on the fun with little compatibility problems.

But let’s get down to the real all-star of the Recon 500 – Turtle Beach’s all-new, patented 60mm Eclipse Dual Drivers. These massive speakers do a great job separating high and low frequencies while also being injected with an AccuTune wood composite to give users an awesome audio experience that captures light sounds and monster bass perfectly without them trampling over each other.

This was especially evident when playing games on my PlayStation 5 and PC such as Destiny 2 and The Division 2 where I was able to hear enemies running around while also being able to hear your “radio guide” NPC talking in your ear as gunshots and explosions were going off with music playing, and they all came through clearly and at the right levels. Speaking of music, these are no slouch for listening to your favorite tunes as well, as my Spotify playlists have never sounded better.

Naturally a great headset also has to have a great microphone, and Turtle Beach nails it with their removable TruSpeak noise-cancelling one that allow clear speech from you without picking up a lot of background noise. I’ll admit I was skeptical at first as I’m not a fan of short boom mics (aka the ones that only reach to your cheekbone). But I’m happy to report this one proved me wrong as it picks up my voice nicely even with the mic being as far back as it is. There’s also the standard on-ear controls for volume and a mute button that’s perfectly within reach for whenever you need to speak with someone out of your game, etc.

Featuring a sleek and comfortable design and powerful 60mm speakers that pump out crisp audio and deep bass, the Turtle Beach Recon 500 Wired Gaming Headset is one of the best headsets you can pick up right now. There’s Black and Arctic Camo colors to choose from, and with a budget-friendly suggested price of $79.95, you’re getting pro-level power and performance without the need of sacrificing your life savings to buy one.
