For those who check out our tech reviews on the regular, you’ll notice that I’ve reviewed my fair share of bags, backpacks, and other travel gear for anyone looking for the best gear to have on the go. The latest one to come my way is the HEX Technical Backpack that just might be the most tough yet stylish backpack I’ve used yet.
Weighing in at a hefty 2lbs and featuring dimensions of 19.5″H x 11.5″W x 4.75″D and 17.5L of space, this backpack is just the right size to carry all of your business and mobile accessories without being too bulky. The first thing that struck me as I took this backpack out of its packaging was the tough, water-resistant material made from Cordura ballistic nylon, which is also highly resistant to tearing and abrasions. Most bags I’ve reviewed have decent and durable nylon fabric, but this feels like something straight out of a police or military department, which makes sense seeing that Cordura makes the fabric used in military body armor.
If that wasn’t enough, the fabric features antimicrobial resistance that repels up to 99% of harmful bacteria, mold, and fungus. This is perfect for those who do a lot of walking, traveling, biking, and such where rain, dust, sweat, etc. can easily work into the material of the product. It’s good to know HEX is looking out for people by adding this to make sure this backpack only carries what’s in it and not what’s outside on it.
The next thing I noticed was the awesome shaped and padded shoulder straps, with one having a passport/phone pocket for easy access. I like how the top of it sticks out from the bag along with the straps so it hugs against the upper part of your back and lower neck for the most comfortable fit, and you can tuck them away and use either the top or side handle to carry the pack. The molded padded back panel is a nice touch that’s hard enough to keep the pack from getting out of shape as you wear it, yet soft enough to make sure your back can breathe so you sweat less and can focus on getting where you need to be.
Then there’s all of the neat compartments and pockets, starting with the main section that can hold both a 16” laptop on one side and a nice sized tablet on the other. The laptop sleeve is even covered in a faux fur, velvet-like material to make sure it stays scratch free, and has a cool magnetic latch at the top to keep it secure. There’s also plenty of pockets for external drives, chargers, cell phones, accessories, and such.
There’s also plenty of room inside for books, papers, etc. to go in between your devices. At the bottom you’ll find two front pockets with cool magnetic closures that contain even more pockets and sections for any kind of small accessories, notepads, keys, and such you can carry. And since the very bottom pocket is magnetically sealed, you can easily open and close it with one hand for quick and easy access as opposed to the old fashioned way of having to juggle holding your bag with one hand and unzipping it with another at the risk of dropping everything, or sitting the bag down on an unclean surface and unzipping it.
Speaking of zippers, this pack features durable, woven into the fabric YKK zippers that are super tough and can be hidden away to the side to deter theft and someone unzipping your bag. At the very top of the pack is a sweet pocket you can store your phone in or a wireless power bank that’s perfect for when you’re taking a break. It would’ve been cool if one came with the bag, but HEX sells a pretty good one or you can use any brand that fits.
If you happen to run into a torrential downpour or moderate rain, you’ll be happy to know there’s a hidden compartment on the underside of the pack that houses a waterproof cover that stretches over the entire backpack to keep it dry as you seek shelter. I also really like the fold flat bottle holder on the side with yet another cool magnetic closure to make sure it stays flat when not in use, and there’s a faux fur laced pocket on the other side for a pair of glasses or anything small and sensitive.
Rounding out the awesome features is an exterior utility strap that you can hang Bluetooth speakers on and other stuff, and a luggage handle pass through that’s perfect if you want to slide this pack onto a rolling suitcase handle. The HEX Technical Backpack is one of the best packs I’ve ever used and comes highly recommended as all of these awesome features and overall durability sets the bar pretty high for any backpacks to follow.
