Ever since I was a kid in the 80s, I’ve been a fan of stereo setups featuring solid wood speakers paired to a classic system with a record and cassette player, and a radio. Those old feelings came back to me when I first took the DALI Spektor 2 Compact Speakers out of the box for review, as they have that wooden, old school look and feel, but is powered by today’s technology to give big sound from a small package.
Pairing these with the Powernode Edge Streaming Amplifier, these small but mighty speakers are a little over 11 inches high and weigh in at 9 lbs a piece. These are perfect for any kind of bookshelf audio system or if you want to be more ambitious and use them as part of a home theater setup.
They’re also pretty versatile when it comes to placement, as they can be used on a shelf, stand or wall mounted. Let’s get down to what really makes these speakers amazing, starting with the tweeter that features a 2.6 kHz to 26 kHz frequency range thanks to being made from an ultra-lightweight woven fabric. This allows it to pick up and deliver even the lowest parts of high-frequency sounds while also covering some of the mid-frequencies with the woofer with little to no audio breakup.
Speaking of which, the 5¼ inch woofer goes the distance with its 2.6 kHz to 54 Hz frequency range, which delivers full, bold sound thanks in part to DALI’s signature wood fiber cone membrane being comprised of fine-grain paper and wood fiber pulp to make sure you’re only hearing the audio you want without any other sound interferences.
While paired with the Powernode Edge, I was able to put the Spektor 2 speakers through their paces and was pleasantly surprised at how rich and full the sound was from them. And that’s just a 40W amplifier, as these speakers can go all the way to 100W should you pair them with the appropriate amp of your choice.
From playing a variety of video games on my PS5, to watching movies featuring Dolby HD audio, to listening to different genres of music, these speakers provided solid, booming audio no matter what I threw at them. This was especially the case on some of the games I played where the audio is crucial or just really enjoyable, like Hi-Fi Rush and Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
If you’re looking for some small but mighty speakers for your audio setup, the DALI Spektor 2 Compact Speakers should be at the top of your list. I love the old school look and feel of them while they also showcase what today’s audio technology can do. Add in that they can be used alone or as part of a home theater setup, as well as being wall mounted, and you have some of the best, most versatile speakers around.
