If you’ve been keeping up with my headset and headphone reviews, you already know I can’t get enough testing them to find the best ones out there. Just when I thought I was done looking after the numerous Turtle Beach and SteelSeries ones I was sent, here comes another challenger with the Audeze Maxwell Wireless Gaming Headset that’s hands down one of the best I’ve used.
Most times when you get one of these expensive headsets, they feel cheap or not what you would expect a $300 one to feel like. That’s not the case with the Maxwell as it feels heavy and solid when you remove it from its packaging. I also like how it has thick, comfy, leather-like padding on the earcups, and a nice headband you can take off and adjust in three different positions for a good fit.
After charging it with the included USB-C cable, I was able to connect the Maxwell to all of my mobile devices with ease, thanks to it featuring Bluetooth connectivity. Even better is that it includes a USB dongle with a small switch on it for low-latency wireless use on PC’s and PlayStation consoles (Xbox users will have to use another version of the Maxwell for their systems).
The 24-bit/96kHz audio this device pumps out is amazing, as it took a bit to get used to the awesome 90mm planar magnetic drivers it has. It was literally like hearing my games, music and movies for the first time as I noticed this headset was picking up sounds I hadn’t noticed before when playing games such as World of Warcraft, Destiny 2, and others that rely on audio to help keep you alive.
That’s because these 90mm drivers are using high-definition audio codecs such as LC3plus, LE Audio, and LDAC to make sure any high-def sound you’re playing comes through flawlessly. Even better is that the range of this headset is incredible as I was able to walk around my nice sized apartment with no loss in signal or sound quality when connected to my PC via the USB dongle, even when behind doors and walls.
You can even switch seamlessly between multiple devices as these feature Bluetooth multipoint. I also like how the microphone uses Audeze’s A.I. noise reduction technology to tune out unwanted background noise, so whoever you’re talking with only hears you and not key clicking, your family talking, etc. There’s also a handy chat mix slider on the earcup to balance how much of the input audio comes in over the chat audio and vice versa.
As if this headset wasn’t amazing enough, it runs for 80+ hours on a single charge, which is perfect for me as I’ve used this headset for about a week at around eight hours a day and have yet to charge it again. And if you should ever run out of juice in the middle of a gaming session, just charge it for twenty minutes to get a day’s worth of use from it.
I’ve used quite a few wireless headsets, but the Audeze Maxwell Wireless Gaming Headset is one of the best for sure. It’s got a nice solid build, pumping sound, a great microphone, and amazing battery life that’ll keep you in the world of gaming or any audio part of your entertainment for quite some time.
