It’s The State of Gaming Podcast, Popzara’s in-depth look at what’s shaking up the gaming landscape delivered on a monthly basis. Our hosts Cory Galliher and Nate Evans guide you through the best, worst, and everything else making headlines and headway in the world of interactive entertainment.
The Biggest Games of June 2023
The biggest games of the month include: Street Fighter 6, Final Fantasy XVI, Diablo 4, Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, Master Detective Archives: Rain Code, Aliens: Dark Descent, Sonic Origins Plus, Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, Pikmin 1 + 2 Remastered (Switch), and even new hardware with the release of Asus’ Rog Ally, the first mainstream Windows 11 gaming handheld.
Circana (Formerly NPD): May 2023
Circana remains the gaming industry’s best snapshot of what’s moving and shaking up both physical and digital retail shelves across the country. All estimates are for entertainment purposes only. Total sales of new gaming hardware and software topped $4.1 billion, a huge 12 percent rise over last year thanks to a resurgent PlayStation 5 and stellar software sales across the board.
On the Top 20 software charts Nintendo’s much-anticipated The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom takes the top spot, becoming the year’s second best-seller in the process. Warner Bros’ Hogwart’s Legacy returns to second place while last year’s chart-topper, EA’s Star Wars: Jedi: Survivor settles in third. Plaion’s Dead Island 2 hangs on in fourth while Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 remake drops to ninth. Unsurprisingly, Nintendo’s long-charter The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild returns in thirteenth.
Everything Else
But there’s more! In the battle for Activision it’s Xbox vs. The FTC – who will win? So many revelations, so little time! Did you catch Nintendo’s game-centric Nintendo Direct, which includes the instant-meme of Elephant Mario? BlizzCon returns! Cheaper for some, pricier for others! And while not entirely game-related, Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse made all the money, and even included some fun Spider-pixels to honor the character’s long legacy in the field.
