Comics and Literacy: the educational equivalent of peanut butter and jelly? At least one man thinks so, and he’s joining us on today’s Popzara Podcast! Editor Nathan Evans talks with writer and comics enthusiast Josh Elder, also founder of Reading With Pictures, a nonprofit organization advocating the use of comics in the classroom to promote literacy and improve educational outcomes for all students.
Both giant comic nerds (apparently), Nathan and Josh delve deep into the wonderful possibilities of these ‘crazy picture panels’, the history of their educational use in classrooms, as well as their mutual admiration of Transformers. It’s an epic chat marred only by the slight transcontinental delay of Skype as Josh shares wisdom from Japan, otherwise known as the land of manga (comics) and a stellar 99% literacy rate. Coincidence?
