Our guest on this buffering episode of the Popzara Podcast is filmmaker Shawn Cauthen, joining our own content binger Nathan Evans, here to talk about his new documentary Netflix vs. The World. Based on Gina Keating’s 2012 book “Netflixed: The Epic Battle for America’s Eyeballs”, the film chronicles the streaming giant’s transformation from its founding in 1997 as a scrappy online DVD disc purveyor to the world-conquering mega media corporation that its since become. The film, ironically, has finally debuted on Amazon Video.

Before producing hits like House of Cards, Stranger Things, The Irishman and Marriage Story it all began with DVDs — that and an inevitable clash with retail video giant Blockbuster Video and their ill-fated efforts to compete with Blockbuster All-Access. With interviews from Netflix insiders (including co-founder Marc Randolph), former Blockbuster CEO John Antioco, archival footage, industry analysts and colorful characters you’ll learn how Reed Hastings and others not only helped transform an ambitious Silicon Valley startup into a media powerhouse, but how instantly available television and movies transformed the culture at large.

So gthe popcorn, boot up the queue and get ready to Netflix and chill with a slice of technological history about a company you only thought you knew. The film’s tagline is “Even Goliath was once David” – but when it’s Netflix vs. The World, who’s David and who’s Goliath?
