As a hardcore turtles fan, I’m still in shock at just how great of a job Nickelodeon has done with revamping the franchise ever since it started a year ago. I was a little skeptical at first, but I’m so glad I gave the new series a chance, as it really does take what made the 80’s series great, only now with more action than ever before. Now we’ve finally reached the end of the first season with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Ultimate Showdown DVD set, which goes out in a blaze of action-packed glory by packing the remaining 12 episodes across on two discs of pizza-powered fun.
As with the previous episodes, our shelled heroes find themselves constantly fighting off mutated villains and other crazy baddies throughout the episodes featured here. Whether it’s a crazed fan of the turtles who tries to help them fight crime in “The Pulverizer”, the return of the female ninja Karai in “Karai’s Vendetta”, Master Splinter being controlled by the disfigured Rat King in “I, Monster”, or fighting off the Kraang and the Shredder in the two-part finale “Showdown”, there’s plenty of non-stop ninja action to be had here with just the right amount of laughs to keep things from getting too dark.
And as with the previous DVD releases, Nickelodeon has done an excellent job bringing the show to DVD. Everything looks and sounds like it should, though I would like to see a Blu-ray release of the series sometime soon. As far as special features go, they’re a little on the light side, but there are some more “Mutation of a Scene” extras on disc one that go into how four of the episodes on this set were made. Disc two contains some more chapters of the digital comic that began on the turtle’s previous release. It would’ve been nice to finally have some meeting the cast and crew extras, but hopefully sometime in the near future (come on Blu-ray release) they’ll have something like this.
Featuring awesome, kick-butt ninja action and plenty of well placed laughs, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Ultimate Showdown DVD set serves up as a great finish to a great series, despite being light on special features. It’s hard to believe that anything could measure up to the original animated series, but Nickelodeon’s incredible series does just that – and in many ways surpasses it. High on action and genuine laughs, anyone looking for a fun series for the family to watch will instantly enjoy this release and the previous entries. Bring on season two!
