As popular as the Looney Tunes franchise is, it’s hard to believe there’s never been a theatrical film release of it that’s solely animated (sorry but Space Jam, it’s sequel, and Looney Tunes: Back in Action don’t count). Thankfully we have the first with The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie that blends classic slapstick comedy with some modern twists that’ll have you laughing to the moon and back.
Director Peter Browngardt makes his directorial debut with this wacky adventure that follows two of our favorite Looney Tunes stars, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig (both voiced by the extremely talented Eric Bauza), who were raised together by the kind Farmer Jim since they were infants. After passing away, he leaves them the house which sadly has grown dilapidated over time and needs some serious work done on it. This forces our comedic duo to find jobs so they can raise the money to get it fixed or be forced to move out of the neighborhood.
After failing at numerous jobs thanks to Daffy being…well…daffy, they luckily come across Petunia Pig (Candi Milo) while eating at a diner, and she offers them jobs at the local gum factory where she works. Daffy and Porky end up working well together at the factory and surprisingly don’t mess it up. Meanwhile an alien (voiced by Peter MacNicol) makes his way to Earth via a spaceship and begins to infect people with a green goo that just happens to make its way into the factory that changes them into zombie-like creatures after chewing the contaminated gum.
When they notice people acting strange and turning into these zombies, Daffy, Porky, and Petunia manage to escape the factory and try to think up a plan to stop the infection from spreading and find a way to turn the people back to normal. It’s going to be a wild and looney ride to do so, as they’ll not only have to overcome the alien and his zombie minions, but also their own personal problems that get in the way.
And that’s the main part I really loved about this film, is that it makes you think you’re going to see an all-out, goofy cartoon comedy, but the further you get into it, the more it dips into a surprisingly dramatic side I wasn’t expecting. I found it to be pretty cool as it was nice seeing how Daffy and Porky don’t always get along thanks to Daffy’s slacker attitude and causing unintentional chaos whenever he does try to step up and help Porky and Petunia, while Porky is the serious-about-everything guy that gives these two serious “The Odd Couple” vibes.
I also found out that we almost didn’t get this release due to the restructuring of Warner Bros a few years ago, as it was supposed to be released back in 2022, but was shelved along with a few other WB films such as Batgirl and another Looney Tunes film, Coyote vs. Acme that’s still in film limbo and will most likely stay there depending on how The Day the Earth Blew Up fares at the box office.
Thankfully Ketchup Entertainment stepped in and bought the rights to release The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie as it’s a goofy and shockingly dramatic ride that I’m sure families and viewers, young and old will have an out of this world time with. Here’s hoping this will do well at the movies and that we get to see Coyote Vs Acme in the near future.
