Ever since early last year, I heard a lot of my friends talk about an anime series called Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, but figured I’d just get to it whenever I could. After seeing how the recent film follow up, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train, is smashing box office records for both here and in Japan, I knew I had to sit down and see what all the hype was about.
I can honestly say the show was well worth it and then some, as it was one of the best I’ve seen in some time. Now we have the movie that picks up right where the hit show left off and continues to deliver the awesome action, comedy, and emotional drama the series is known for.
The plot follows our beloved hero Tanjiro, his sister Nezuko, and his demon slayer friends Zenitsu and Inosuke heading to their next mission aboard a scary train where some of their fellow slayers have been murdered. Thankfully they have the high ranking slayer Kyojuro Rengoku there who is also looking into the murders.
It doesn’t take long for the big bad to show up in the form of a twisted demon named Enmu who has the Freddy Kruger-like powers to control people’s dreams and destroy their minds and bodies both in and out of the dream realm, and he takes great pleasure in doing so.
This is where Tanjiro and the gang do what they do best, overcome impossible odds and fight their way through any demons and the dangers they throw at them. Just like in the series, everything is well drawn and animated to make sure every special move and violent ability from both our heroes and the demons comes to life perfectly. This is also my first time hearing the characters with an English dub and the cast nails it nicely.
I really enjoyed this film and how it feels like a perfect continuation of the series, as it feels like someone just took four bonus episodes to the first season and spliced them together to make this movie. Everything fans love from the show is here, from all of the insane action, to the crazy comedy brought on from how different Tanjiro and his friends are, to the emotional moments that bring the feels.
If you’re a fan of the series, you’ve most likely seen Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train already. If you haven’t, be sure to watch the awesome anime series first as it’s not necessary, but it does help and makes you feel like you’re experiencing a bonus reward with this film for doing so. Either way, do yourself a favor and check out the series and this movie, you won’t regret it.
