In my years of watching anime, I’ve seen more than my fair share of the fantasy genre where brave heroes long for action and adventure while making new friends and enemies along the way. But not since the crazy Those Who Hunt Elves series have I seen something as wild as Sentai Filmworks latest release, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?. Coming off as a wild mix of a dating sim mixed with a fantasy anime, this is one to take a look at if you enjoy either of those.

Taking place in a country where a dungeon is its main focus, people who wish to be heroes can take it on and prove their worth by overcoming the loads of enemies and obstacles within. One such person is our main character named Bell, who sets out to tackle this dungeon at the behest of his grandfather that thinks he should go there to finally become a man…and pick up some cute ladies along the way. Wait, what? Who knew fighting for your life in a dungeon filled with all sorts of enemies would be the perfect dating ground as well. So that’s the case here for Bell as he wishes to prove himself worthy to Ais, the woman who rescued him in his first dungeon attempt and has fallen in love with. But what happens when Bell comes across all sorts of lovely ladies that fall for him on his quest, including the deity Hestia that he serves? All sorts of craziness and adventure that only the realm of anime can provide of course.

I had a good time watching this one as it mixes fantasy action with just enough harem comedy to make a nice mix. It does have plenty of anime tropes to be sure, such as Bell being the kind and naive young guy that all the ladies go for, but these cliches don’t get in the way of enjoying the series at all, at least to me anyway. Since this is a Blu-ray release, everything looks and sounds good here, which is always a plus when watching something as fun as this show that relies on both visual and audio cues for its gags. The extras are on the light side with opening and closing credit scenes being the only thing to check out, but the series itself is where all the excitement is.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? answers the question with a nice no, as it makes for a perfect place to pick up ladies with plenty of action and adventure on the side. If you enjoy harem anime and the fantasy genre of it, you’ll want to pick up the check for this hot date as soon as possible.
