Seems like it was just yesterday when the first Spongebob movie was released back in 2004. Now eleven years later we finally get a stand-alone follow up to that porous picture in The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, which has made it’s way home since February to a high definition Blu-ray packed with fun and silliness that fans have come to love from Bikini Bottom.

Our tale kicks off with the mean-spirited pirate named Burger Beard (played wonderfully by Antonio Banderas) stealing a magic book that lets anyone rewrite reality in Bikini Bottom. So of course he uses it to steal the Krabby Patty formula from Spongebob’s place of employment, the Krusty Krab. With the delicious patties gone, this naturally drives everyone in Bikini Bottom mad and turns things into a Mad Max-like post-apocalyptic age. It’s up to Spongebob, his friends, and even his longtime nemesis Plankton to use teamwork to save their town and possibly the entire world from Burger Beard.

I didn’t think I would enjoy this movie as much as I did, as I used to be a hardcore Spongebob fan back in the day but fell out of watching it some time ago, but it’s good to know it still has some of the wacky humor that made it famous. One part that stuck out to me is when Spongebob and Plankton create a time travel machine which sends them to this freakish realm where a talking dolphin watches over the universe. The same dolphin later returns to help them venture out of the ocean and onto land, which changes the film from 2D to 3D CG animation mixed with live action. This in turn makes the movie feel like two films in one and serves up some pretty fun laughs as you can imagine.

Everything looks and sounds great thanks to the high definition transfer on Blu-ray, which really shows off the super clean look of the digital animation here. If that wasn’t enough, there’s also some cool special features that are broken into three sections. The first few that make up the “On the Surface” section deal with going behind the scenes on the making of the movie and all the things that went into making it as zany and fun as it is. The “Underwater Awesomeness” section has some nifty educational-ish special features, while the “Bikini Bottom Boogie” part of the extras features focuses on the musical aspects of the film and has karaoke versions of the songs from the movie. There’s also a few deleted and alternate scenes for viewers to take a look at as well.

The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water Blu-ray is filled with fun and nautical nonsense that fans have come to know and love from their favorite porous person. Long time viewers of the series and those looking for a great animated treat are sure to enjoy the zany antics here along with neat special features that make this a good Blu-ray to go fish for the family.
