I’m really enjoying how Warner Bros keeps releasing a lot of shows I grew up with back in the day. From Space Ghost to Thundarr, and to another show that aired right along with Space Ghost, The Herculoids. Being a long time fan, I had to request The Herculoids: The Complete Original Series for review as it’s awesome to see the show again in high-definition and know that long-time fans such as myself and new generations can enjoy it.
Taking place on a planet that resembles prehistoric Earth, The Herculoids are a close knit family made up of Zandor, his wife Tara and their son Dorno, along with their creature companions Zok who looks like an alien dragon, a giant ape made of stone named Igoo, Tundro that looks like a mutated rhino, and the lovable Gloop and Gleep who are slime looking creatures that can change shape to help out.
Whether its fighting off invaders from space, monsters from their planet and beyond the stars, and so on, The Herculoids are always ready to fight off evil and defend themselves from whatever dangers threaten them and their planet. Seeing that the character designs are from the famous Alex Toth, they occasionally even get some cameo appearance help from Space Ghost whenever the need arises which always makes for a fun crossover.
All eighteen episodes (each consisting of two adventures) are here and look great. It’s amazing how well WB cleaned them up without losing any of the small details that make the series what it is. The audio side of things is also spot on as everything comes through nicely. Special features are on the super light side as there’s only one that originally aired on Cartoon Network called “The Herculoids: the First Family of Planet Quasar” that gives a nice and short look into the series and how it became such a hit back in the day.
As with Space Ghost and Thundarr, I absolutely loved The Herculoids: The Complete Original Series as I hadn’t seen the show in so long and was akin to visiting an old friend. With simple but great artwork and animation, fun stories, and plenty of action and humor, this release will having you and your family yelling “Herculoids” with Zandor and his family soon enough.
