Anyone who has followed my reviews of the previous seasons of this show are already aware I’ve been a big fan of it from day one. So it goes without saying that the latest DVD release that kicks off the fourth season, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Beyond the Known Universe, couldn’t be released soon enough for me. Featuring twelve episodes on two discs along with some extras, Nickelodeon continues to keep making this series a hit for all to enjoy.

Picking up where the previous season left us hanging at, the turtle brothers, April and Casey have lost everything as the Earth is destroyed. Before they can hope to do anything about it, they’ll have to battle their way past new intergalactic foes and problems first. From Casey unleashing a freaky, fourth-dimensional being in “The Weird World of Wyrm”, to fighting in a Triceraton battle arena in “The Arena of Carnage”, the brothers will have to come together like never before. At least they’re not alone, as the intelligent but fun cyborg known as the Fugitoid (voiced perfectly by David Tennant) is with them every step of the way providing much needed new gear and tactics to survive their trials in space while also needing the turtles help for his own problems.

As with the previous seasons, I thoroughly enjoyed watching these episodes as they seem to fly by when you watch due to them being so entertaining. Most shows would be running low on steam by now, but Nickelodeon manages to keep things just as fun and fresh as they’ve ever been with the right blend of action, comedy and drama. I’m still holding out for a Blu-ray release of this series one day, but everything looks and sounds good despite lacking the crystal clarity of high definition.

If there’s a downside to this set, it’s the light load of extras this time around. The other seasons had a fun, on-going set of extras called Mutation of a Scene. Those used to them will be sad to know they’re missing on this release, with the only special feature being a series recap called “Kicking Shell & Taking Names”. While this a great way for newcomers to jump into the show at this point, it would just be better to actually watch the previous entries instead.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Beyond the Known Universe DVD set is another great start to the latest season of the hit show. Any fan already knows the fun and adventure they can expect here while those new to the series can jump right in at this point thanks to the special feature recap, but they’ll really want to go back and watch the previous seasons instead. Any way you cut it, this collection makes for one shell of a good time for all.
