It seems like not long ago when Apple TV Plus was just getting started, and one of its hit shows, Ted Lasso, became the talk of the internet as everyone seemed to agree on it being one of the best TV series of all time. Those who don’t have access to the streaming service can finally see what the talk is about with the Ted Lasso: The Richmond Way Blu-ray set, which contains three seasons of laughs and touching drama that scores big.
The series follows the life of Theodore “Ted” Lasso (Jason Sudeikis), an American college football coach from Kansas that gets the wildest opportunity of his life, being hired to coach a British football team, AFC Richmond. We quickly learn this only happened because the owner, Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) won the team in a bitter divorce from her billionaire husband and hopes they’ll lose badly in order to get back at her husband that loves AFC Richmond.
This seems like a sure thing, as Ted knows next to nothing about British football and takes to adjusting in England like a fish out of water. But through hard work along with Ted’s optimistic outlook and determination, things begin to change for the better both on and off the field for Lasso, the team, the staff, as well as their families and friends.
To say anymore would ruin the joy and fun that comes from watching this series, and once you get into it, you’ll quickly see why it became such a hit. Released during the middle of the pandemic, it was a breath of positive fresh air that all of us needed at just the right time.
It’s been some time since I’ve watched a TV show that’s genuinely fun to see play out, all while packing plenty of laughs and emotions that’ll pull you into the show and have you binge watching in no time. Seeing this was a high-definition series on Apple TV Plus, the show looks and sounds amazing with loads of color and detail popping on the screen and audio that places you in the middle of the laughs, the football games, and drama.
For all the great things this series and set does, it sadly lacks any special features. So all you’re getting is the series and nothing else, which is a real shame given that we know there’s tons of behind the scenes footage, gag reels, deleted and extended scenes, audio commentaries, and more they could’ve included on this set. Something tells me another, better set is on the way for some infamous double-dipping shenanigans.
While this is already one of the best Blu-ray sets of the year, it could’ve been so much better if it contained special features. Even still, the Ted Lasso: The Richmond Way set is a fun time for all who give it a chance. Full of laughs and feel good moments, once it sinks its football cleats into you, it doesn’t let go until the final goal is scored.
