I’ve been a fan of Scooby-Doo ever since I could remember seeing the show on TV as a kid. It’s had a couple of hits and misses throughout the fifty years its been around, and back in 1998 is when it tried to go for a more darker and serious tone with the made for video movie, Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island. Well now the gang is set to return to that spooky place in the aptly titled Scooby-Doo! Return to Zombie Island. It has all of the trademark humor the series is known for with some family friendly thrills and chills that fans will love.
The plot has Scooby-Doo and the gang looking to take a break from all of their mystery solving for a while. So when they conveniently win an all expenses paid vacation, they couldn’t be any happier to pack and leave. Turns out this vacation spot seems all too familiar once they get there, as it’s the dreaded Zombie Island they visited twenty-some years ago. It’s up to them to solve yet another mystery as they survive the best way they can while finding out who’s behind the zombies this time around.
The past few Scooby videos have been so-so, but I actually had a good time with this one. Maybe it’s because I haven’t watched one in awhile, but the silly humor and mystery solving moments were enough to keep me and some of my family that watched it with me entertained. While it was nice having this on DVD, I would’ve liked to had seen it in high definition on Blu-ray, as the DVD looks and sounds okay on today’s 4K TVs, but it pales in comparison to a standard Blu-ray release.
At least there’s some cool extras to check out when the movie is over, which just happens to be more Scooby-Doo goodness. There’s an episode from the The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries “Ghosts of the Ancient Astronauts” and one from What’s New, Scooby-Doo? “Mummy Scares Best”. Both of these were nice treats to go along with the film as it gives viewers an opportunity to take a peek at two of the more recent TV series.
Scooby-Doo! Return to Zombie Island is a family fun treat for fans or those just looking to have some kid-friendly thrills for Halloween or anytime of the year. The movie captures the best parts of this beloved franchise, the humor, fun, and creepy mystery moments, and throws in some cool extras that’s worth taking the trip to zombie island for.
