Most of the harem anime shows I’ve seen are usually humorous with some bonus laughs stemming from the stereotypical anime tropes for the ladies involved. One of the latest ones released from Sentai, Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time – Season One: Complete Collection, retains most of the harem charm fans love, but also pushes it to uncomfortable levels.
via YouTubeTaking place in a world of fantasy and mythic creatures, Peter Grill is the strongest warrior of in the world. Since most in this world are all about being the strongest, it only makes sense that all of the strongest ladies in the land want to be with Peter so they can bare powerful offspring.
The catch is that Peter is already set to marry his fiancée, but these powerful women don’t care and will do anything to shack up with him, with some going about it in funny and cute ways while others will brute force they way on him which some (if not most) might find offensive.
If not for that last part, I’d say this was a typical, run-of-the-mill harem series that fans will enjoy. But some may not like the fact that a few of the ladies are basically having their way with the main character against his will, as though the series just throws away the typical harem humor and turns into something that would make S&M films blush.
Besides those moments though, there are some fun bits to enjoy, and everything looks and sounds great. As for the special features, we have clean opening and closing scenes, and a look at some of the storyboards from select episodes which is nice.
Outside of the forceful moments of the series, there’s some fun to be had with the Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time – Season One: Complete Collection. I wish that it didn’t have those divisive moments, but here’s hoping if another season comes along that they’ll tone it down some and make it fun for all harem fans.
