It looks China’s box office is where all the action is, as they keep the hits coming with Operation Red Sea, a film that has grossed over half a billion dollars, making it the seventh highest grossing film of 2018 and second highest in China right after Wolf Warrior 2. Thanks to our friends at Well Go USA, I got to see why this film is so epic and it comes highly recommended for any action/war movie buff out there.

Directed by Dante Lam who also helmed another action hit called Operation Mekong, this film follows an elite Chinese Navy team called the Jiaolong Assault Team. Led by Yang Rui (Zhang Yi), the other members consist of Tong Li (Jiang Luxia), Zhang Tiande (Wang Yutian), Xu Hong (Jiang Du), and Zhuang Yu (Henry Mak) as they use their skills to rescue the crew of a cargo ship that’s been taken over by Somalian pirates.

This is just the tip of the iceberg as this situation leads the team into more action as they learn this ties in with a terrorist plot to capture a nuclear bomb while the team is busy dealing with the pirates, and it’s up to the squad to put an end to the terrorists using their signature skills from sniping to strategic demolition.

Once you dive into this film, it’s clear where the budget comes into play at, which is the high octane action segments. Lam does an amazing job capturing every detail of it, from the slow-motion precision of long distance sniper shots hitting their mark, to the Michael Bay-esque explosions that rattle the screen (and your sound system), everything is shot well and comes off feeling like an epic history documentary mixed with an action film.

As I mentioned earlier, the visuals and audio are extremely on point in this Blu-ray release, as everything looks and sounds as though you’re right there in the middle of the firefights and explosions that dominate the movie. Sadly there’s not much in the way of special features outside some deleted scenes and some trailers, but the real special treat here is the feature film itself.

If you love action and war films, then Operation Red Sea is the Blu-ray you’re looking for. Well thought out and shot action scenes coupled with great actors who make you feel as though you’re watching a real military squad going about their duties and saving the world from terrorists make this an operation you’ll want to be part of.
