It’s been awhile since I’ve watched a good harem anime series, as most of the newer ones have that “seen it before and have seen it done better” feel to them. While I wasn’t lucky enough to have seen the first season prior to watching the twelve episodes contained in the new Nyaruko: Crawling with Love! Second Season, I don’t think that old adage applies here. Spread across two packed discs, the series (Haiyore! Nyaruko-san W for you Nihongo ga fans) is easily one of the strangest, yet most instantly fun shows I’ve seen in years. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to track down the original series to catch up…
The story follows a teen by the name of Mahiro Yasaka who happens to enjoy the Cthulhu mythos of H.P. Lovecraft. Much to his surprise one day, he gets attacked by a monster only to be saved by white haired girl named Nyarko. Mahiro soon learns she just so happens to be a Cthulhu-like creature in disguise that is an agent of the Planetary Defense Organization and takes it upon herself to protect him from all things evil and weird while also trying force herself on him whenever she can. As with practically every harem anime, there are other ladies who also wish to be with Mahiro as well. Mix in Mahiro’s mom trying to keep things in order, the fact Mahiro tends to attack with forks when provoked by the ladies, evil creatures coming from everywhere including a monkey monster among things, along with more zany situations than you can shake a fork at, and you’ve got one wild ride of an anime show.
It took awhile for it to happen, but Nyaruko grew on me the more I watched it. It was a little rough at first, especially not knowing all of the details from the previous season (there is a slight recap of sorts at the beginning though). But once I just gave in and got to know the crazy characters and the overall wackiness of the series (it’s really difficult to try and explain any of it, but take my word when I say it’s really wacky), I felt it was one of the better anime shows I’ve seen in awhile.
As with the recent Hanasaku Iroha the Movie I also reviewed, NIS America has done a great job with the Blu-ray production here. Watching anime in high-definition is always a treat to me as you get to see every detail in the artwork and animation. Everything shows up and plays out crisp and clean as though the animation can leap off the screen at any moment. The audio is also just as detailed, as the original Japanese audio (with English subtitles of course) comes through crystal clear. For those of us who grew up on fuzzy VHS tapes (and worse, bootlegged VHS tapes and Video CDs) having such a high production value set is worth the money.
The extras are a little light as there’s only the clean opening and endings along with the original Japanese trailer for the show. Those who purchase the premium box set however will get a bonus hardcover 36 page art book that also features an episode guide, character info, and full color illustrations that any anime fan will be sure to eat up.
The Nyaruko: Crawling with Love! Second Season Blu-ray set is by far one of the most weird but fun anime series I’ve had the pleasure of watching. While it’s a bit light in the bonus features department, it made me want to seek out the original series and manage to see what I’ve been missing. Even still, I was able to enjoy the zany cast of characters and crazy situations these crazy characters make or find themselves in throughout the series. If you’re looking for a fun harem anime series to check out with some wild new curves thrown in, you’ll want to get wrapped up in the tentacles of Nyaruko when you can.
