I remember hearing about and watching some of Mushibugyo some time ago as the samurai setting pulled me in while their fight against giant insect monsters and the lewd but silly humor kept me around. All these years later, we finally get some extra side stories to this wild series with Sentai’s Mushibugyo: Complete OVA Collection.
Taking place not long after the anime series, these three OVA episodes gives viewers some more feudal Japan action with Jinbei and his monster fighting friends as they look after a young boy named Torakichi who wants to learn the way of the samurai to protect his family. While most see this as a lost cause, Jinbei being the ever so cool person he is sees this as a perfect opportunity to take someone under his wing.
It doesn’t take long for the action to kick off and get Torakichi some hands on training once the insect monsters show up attacking anyone and everything in sight. As if that wasn’t enough to deal with, he’ll also have to make his way around all of the crazy antics Jinbei and the gang tend to get into, namely plenty of comedic fanservice the series is known for.
I had a good time with these episodes as they’re fun while being short and to the point, which is always a plus in my book. Some might not care of the odd-looking artstyle the show uses, but it grew on me the more I watched and reminded me of a lot of classic anime shows from the 70s.
Since these are OVAs with a nice budget, they look, animate and sound great in high-definition which helps aid the action and comedic antics throughout the episodes. There aren’t any special features, but the fun you’ll have with the episodes is more than enough for this release.
The Mushibugyo: Complete OVA Collection is a nice treat for fans of the series while also being accessible enough for newcomers to join in on the fun. It has the right mix of action, comedy and wacky fanservice that will make any viewer have a bug slaying good time.
