If you caught my review for this year’s Lego Star Wars game, you’ll know I’m a fan of Lego’s take on the franchise and many funny things they do with it. So when I heard about them making a new TV series on Disney XD, I knew I had to take a look. While I didn’t get a chance to see it on air, I’m glad I was able to snag a review copy of the Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures Season One Blu-ray set containing all thirteen episodes of the season. If you’re like me and love Lego and their Star Wars tales, this is the droid…er…series you’re looking for.
Set in a period that takes place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, this show follows the adventures of a family of sibling scavengers named Zander, Kordi, and Rowan, who build starships from junk they find throughout the galaxy and sell them to get by. When Rowan finds out he has a connection to the Force thanks to an old Jedi artifact called the Kyber Saber he comes across, his family ends up getting caught in the crosshairs of the Empire. So it’s up to them and the many familiar Star Wars characters they come across to find out what powers the saber has and use them to stop the Empire.
Watching the often funny but at times serious moments of this show was fun, especially with the likable main characters and familiar faces from the Star Wars universe making cameo appearances, from Lando and Chewie to the big bad Darth Vader himself. The series comes alive and looks great on Blu-ray as everything comes in clean and clear, and the audio is top notch with every recognizable Star Wars sound effect ringing in perfectly.
There’s not much in the way of special features, but what’s here is pretty good. “Freemaker Salvage and Repair” has our heroes Rowan, Kordi and Zander taking viewers on a tour of their shop and salvage adventures, and “The Freemaker Adventures: Meet the Freemaker Family” goes in depth with our family of heroes and the actors who voice them through a series of scenes from the show, behind the scenes footage and interviews with the cast.
If you love Lego and Star Wars (who doesn’t?), you’ll want to fire up your hyperdrive and snag a copy of Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures Season One on Blu-ray. The main characters and familiar faces are awesome, the show looks and sounds good, and has some limited but fun extras that bring all the pieces together for a good time in our favorite galaxy far, far away.
