I have to be honest and say I don’t know a lot about the famous Warring States period that China had outside of what little I’ve learned from the infamous Dynasty Warriors and Romance of the Three Kingdoms games. One of Funimation’s latest titles, Kingdom: Season Two places an epic spin during this time with 39 episodes on six DVD discs that contain more than enough action and drama for any ancient battle enthusiast.

Picking up one year after the events in the first season, the main character named Xin has won many battles and is close to living his dream of becoming general to a large army and unite China under one ruler. As he leads his division of 300 troops into battle, he discovers he’s not the only one with dreams of becoming general, as two other highly skilled leaders are looking to do the same. When things look like they couldn’t get any worse, enemies that have been hidden within the kingdom start to show their true colors and seek to undo all of the work Xin and his army have fought for. It’s up to him and his allies to come together and fight off the enemies in and outside of the kingdom, or all will be lost.

To say anymore than that would be spoiling the story and the many twists and turns this series has to offer. Anyone who enjoy the joys, pains, and drama that comes with major conflicts and wars will be on the edge of their seats with this anime, as it’s been awhile since I’ve seen one that comes together as well as this one does. The art and animation is pretty good, even though it tends to switch between 2D and CG cel-shaded characters more times than not. For a DVD release, Funimation has done a good job making sure the visuals and audio come in nicely. Sadly there’s little in the extras department besides some trailers, but given the 39 episodes to watch, viewers will be more than entertained by those.

The Kingdom: Season Two DVD set is one anime series both fans of the genre and those who enjoy epic wars being fought out will enjoy. Interesting characters, plot twists, and plenty of action and drama will pull in any who dare to enter this kingdom, and won’t let them go until the final battle has been fought.
