Ever since the original film, I’ve been a big fan of the John Wick films. Apparently so is everyone else as there’s a TV series in the works and a video game coming soon. The latest one in the series keeps the action going strong with John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, which contains more action that you can shake a $5,000 suit at.
Editor Christian Stirling enjoyed what he saw in theaters, and you can head over to his review for all of the plot info and more while I share my two cents here. I also had a great time with this one as the action just keeps coming in the form of other assassins trying their best to take John out. Of course, they all learn the hard way why he’s been labeled the “boogeyman” of the hitman underworld as he cuts, shoots, and rides horses to fight them one on one and en masse.
As with the previous movies, this one features loads of carefully choreographed action scenes that will make fans squeal with delight (I know I did a few times). These look and sound pretty sweet on Blu-ray and I can only imagine how awesome they are on the 4K HDR release. Even on the standard Blu-ray, the visuals and audio are basically perfect as every detail from the threads of John’s suit, to the brutal details of him taking out bad guys will have you loving every moment of it. And it goes without saying that the Dolby HD audio makes every gunshot, explosion, and deadly hand-to-hand combat sound rock your home theater system.
Once you get a breather from the action, there’s a few special features you can go over. “Parabellum: Legacy of The High Table” features a few interviews with the cast and crew discussing the film and their thoughts on it while behind the scenes footage plays in between. I liked “Check Your Sights” that goes behind all of the awesome stuff that went into making the fight scenes and stunts, “Dog Fu” is a fun piece that talks about filming the shootout scenes with the dogs Halle Berry’s character has. “Behind the Scenes of John Wick Hex” features some of the upcoming game, and “Saddle up Wick” goes into the making of the fun and insane horse action sequence in the film.
Fans of action will want to pick up John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum if they haven’t already, as it’s one of the best you’ll see this year or anytime for that matter. It’s almost hard to believe that, some twenty years after the original Matrix, that Keanu Reeves is able to keep delivering cutting-edge action epics like this, and someone make each one better than the last. Parabellum quickly became the most successful entry in the series yet, and you’ll definitely be glued to your seat with crazy action and perfectly-timed bits of humor that action fans surely squeal over. I know I did!
