If you missed my review of the series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, you’ll see I had a good time watching Bell and the gang working together to fight off monsters and coming across lovely ladies in their quest to save their fantasy world. Now a few months later, Sentai Filmworks gives viewers some fanservice in the side episode OVA Is it Wrong to Expect a Hot Spring in a Dungeon?. Most will feel as though this should’ve been included with the series set, and they wouldn’t be wrong. But fans and anyone who enjoys good fanservice and cool collectables will want to get steamy in this hot spring of fun.
Picking up right after the intense battle Bell and his friends had in episode 13, they decide to stop at an undiscovered hot spring they come across on their way back to town. Hermes has also conveniently brought along enough skimpy swimsuits for the whole group to wear, and it doesn’t take long to see where this 20-some minute OVA is going. That’s right, the gang’s letting everything all hang out and leaving little to the imagination. As viewers enjoy the scenery, we learn that like most things that seem too good to be true, that it is as monsters have setup this spring as a trap for our heroes, and it’s up to Bell and company to fight them off while also dealing with the inevitable wardrobe malfunctions as they battle.
As with any good fanservice, this OVA nails it with just the right amount of “scenery”, comedy, and action that mixes together really well here. It really would’ve been nice to have had this included with the first series collection, but I also understand that Sentai Filmworks is trying to mimic how Japan does its releases. Viewers will be happy to know the visuals and audio are on point thanks to a high definition Blu-ray release that also features the original Japanese audio as well as the English dub. As a sort of goodwill gesture for those looking to justify purchasing this OVA, they also included some sweet extras in the form of a bonus booklet that goes more into the episode with some fun pictures to boot, and the coolest extra of them all being the two-disc CD soundtrack for the series that’s actually pretty awesome to listen to.
While even the most dedicated fan may find it hard to shell out some cash for a single bonus episode to their favorite series, Is it Wrong to Expect a Hot Spring in a Dungeon? has enough fanservice, humor, action, and some sweet extras to help tip the scales in its favor. If you loved the anime and are a completionist, you’ll want to take a dip into this spring as soon as possible.
