As with most people in 2010, I became a big fan of How to Train Your Dragon, as it seemed director Chris Sanders could do no wrong after his previous hit, Lilo and Stitch. Now after a sequel and some TV series later, we’ve finally come to the end of an awesome journey in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. Fans will love this nice send-off to the franchise, while newcomers will want to go back and catch up to this hidden world of wonders.

Our own Ethan Brehm enjoyed this film during its theatrical run, and you can check out his review for all of the plot details and his take on the movie. I’m here to talk about this 4K release and my thoughts on it, and you can already guess that I most certainly loved it. It has everything that made the following films, specials, and TV series great such as sweet moments of comedy, action, and adventure, along with tender moments that will assuredly tug on your heartstrings and make you wish this wasn’t the end, but you know it has to happen.

Thanks to the awesome power of 4K, everything looks and sounds perfect, especially with HDR color and Dolby Atmos audio. The picture and details leap from the screen as though you were at an IMAX presentation, and the sound rumbles your home theater just like at the movies, which makes this experience even more amazing. There’s also a nice amount of special features that keeps the laughs and feels going long after the credits roll.

The extras kick off with audio commentary by writer/director Dean DeBlois, producer Brad Lewis, and Simon Otto that’s in charge of the animation. Here they go into how they went about creating the film, its characters, and so on while sharing some anecdotes in between. There’s also a few extras that go behind the scenes of the making of the film, the franchise as a whole, and the voice actors behind the characters. Rounding these features out are some animated shorts that are a nice bonus, as well as some deleted and alternate scenes.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is a great ending to a fun and amazing franchise. It has everything fans and their families have come to love from these characters, it looks and sounds awesome in 4K with HDR and Dolby audio, and it’s packed with loads of special features that’s sure to unearth this hidden world for all to enjoy.
