I’ve been a fan of anthologies for as long as I can remember, as it’s always awesome to see multiple stories following a common thread that can be told in different ways. Some of my favorite ones are of the anime variety, and the Sentai’s Happy-Go-Lucky Days is one of the more interesting titles I’ve seen as it shows some beautiful slice of life tales of love that are both touching and bittersweet.
Starting with a story of a wedding, two ladies who are in love with the bride meet and share stories over drinks about the woman getting married while also quickly growing close to each other and finding a way to carry on without her. Another story features a young man in high school who is in love with his male teacher despite the years age difference and the potential problems it can cause for the both of them.
The last story is broken into two parts with the first following a young college graduate that’s been kicked out by her father when he learns she made an adult video. She then comes to live with the family of a young boy who has a girl as a friend and study partner for school, which the college girl teases them about their puppy love. Finally, in the second part, the boy and girl are now older and have conflicted feelings about each other as they sort through them as best they can.
Watching these stories unfold was a nice treat as they’re fairly short (the film is less than an hour long) and cut straight to the point which is always a plus in my book. I also liked how the love tales varied from yuri, yaoi, and heterosexual relationships to mix things up and provide stories that anyone from any walk of life can relate to.
The art and animation is simplistic but looks awesome on Blu-ray as the audio captures the wonderful voice acting and music that combine to bring all of the emotions that come with being in love. Sadly there isn’t any special features, but the stories will entertain you plenty.
Happy-Go-Lucky Days is a short and nice slice of life anthology that captures the joy and pains that come with opening your heart to love. If you’re looking for something to scratch that romantic itch and want it done in a hurry, you’re in luck with checking out this one.
