I remember hearing about the classic 2D fighting game Sengoku Basara some time ago along with the anime series Sengoku Basara: Samurai Kings coming along not far behind. After numerous games and other media releases of this famed franchise, we finally come to Gakuen Basara: Samurai High School Complete Collection that brings the famous characters to a high school setting that brings top-notch action and comedy to fans and newcomers alike.

It is pretty funny when Japan takes characters from a series, especially one set hundreds of years ago, and brings it to a modern day setting. Such is the case here where the famed Nobunaga Oda is now Principal Nobunaga of the Basara Academy where student council president Toyotomi looks to take over rival schools which in turn gets him suspended. With Toyotomi out of the picture, everyone is looking to claim the student council president spot, from Masamune Date that’s captain of the school baseball team, to star soccer player Yukimura Sanada, and even fellow council members Ieyasu Tokugawa and Mitsunari Ishida.

Needless to say there’s a lot of action and comedy to be had with this one as all of these famed historical characters fighting their way to the student council president position is all kinds of fun. It helps to know some about the characters, but the series is still great for those unfamiliar as all sorts of crazy situations come up from fails at trying to find love, to just getting through a typical school day as the students bicker with one another will have most viewers chuckling with delight.

As with all of the Sentai Filmworks releases I’ve seen, the visuals and sounds are great thanks to a high-definition Blu-ray release, which is perfect for all the action and comedy shown off here. As far as extras go, there’s clean opening and closing animations, and some original Japanese promos to go over once school is over.

If you’re a fan of the Sengoku Basara and know about the historical characters it pokes at, then grab your school backpack as you’re in for a good time with Gakuen Basara: Samurai High School Complete Collection. This show is filled with loads of laughs and fun action bits that will have you looking forward to homeroom in this school.
