If you enjoyed the thrilling and delicious first season to Food Wars, you’ll be happy to know that Sentai Filmworks did a quick turnaround with the next batch of episodes in the Food Wars: The Second Plate Complete Collection set. So if Yukihira Soma and company left you starving for more delectable delights, these thirteen episodes are sure to keep viewers full and happy.
Picking up not long after Yukihira Soma’s victory in the first season, the students at Totsuki Culinary Academy are dwindling down to a select few that know how to throw down when it comes to making food look beautiful and taste delicious. So it goes without saying that Yukihira is going to have to take his culinary skills to new heights in this season. This goes especially for some of the other opponents he’ll come across in an all new series of cooking tournaments where not only do the cooks use normal skills to prepare their food, but are throwing some science into the mix as well. Whether it’s making a bento box or finding a way to combine food acids to enhance food compatibility, Yukihira and his friends will have to give it their all and then some, or pack up and leave the academy.
As in real life, this second helping tends to outdo the first as it’s more action-packed and sprinkled with even more comedic moments. I like how things got more intense for Yukihira and his buds as the show went on, and it made me want to get up and experiment cooking some things more than a few times as I watched. As with the first season, this one looks and sounds great thanks to a high definition Blu-ray release, and it’s a little light in the special features department as there’s only clean opening and ending animations, but the main course of the episodes is where the real treat lies.
If you enjoyed the first season of the anime or even remotely like food/cooking shows, you’ll want to pull up a chair and help yourself to Food Wars: The Second Plate Complete Collection. Everything fans loved about the previous season is back with the heat cranked up to new levels as Yukihira and company push their skills to new levels while still managing to live life and have some fun in between. So go ahead and load up your plate with this culinary delight of a series, as you won’t regret it.
