I grew up with Eddie Murphy and his rise to fame from Saturday Night Live, to his classic films such as Trading Places (also released with this Blu-ray), 48 Hours and Beverly Hills Cop. As his career went on, he would start to get more ambitious in his films, as he would play not only the main character but multiple ones as well. This is something he would go on to do in movies like The Nutty Professor, but it started here with the release of Coming to America: 30th Anniversary Edition. Considered by many to be one of the greatest comedy films of all time, this Blu-ray is a must have for anyone’s collection.

In this classic, Murphy stars as Prince Akeem of Zamunda where he lives a rich life in Africa but dreams of going out and forging his own path in the world. Against his parents wishes, he turns down his arranged marriage and sets off to New York City to find a woman who will love him for himself and not his riches and power. Accompanied by his best friend and assistant Semmi (Arsenio Hall), the two experience both the exciting and harsh ways of the big apple as they get into one wild adventures after another while trying to find love in the process.

To say more would ruin a great, fish-out-of-water comedy that you really do need to see for yourself. As if the movie wasn’t great enough with Murphy and Hall playing the main characters and numerous other zany ones, there’s a lot of other great cast members that take this film over the top. Co-stars such as Samuel L. Jackson, Louie Anderson, Eriq La Salle, James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair who would go off to play the similar characters in Disney’s The Lion King, and more. The visuals and audio look and sound great here, and definitely makes the movie better than I remember it being back in the day.

There’s also a few special features from the 2007 release Blu-ray such as some featurettes that go into the makeup and costume designs, along with some behind-the-scenes pieces. There’s also an interview with Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall who discuss working on the film and some of their experiences while filming, and some other small but cool extras.

If you’re a fan or have never seen this, do yourself a favor and pick up Coming to America: 30th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray, as it’s one of the best romance-comedies you’ll ever see. A great cast backed up by an ever greater cast, along with some hilarious fish-out-of-water antics and touching romance will have you cracking up while also pulling on your heartstrings.
