I remember like it was yesterday being a kid and growing up watching ChiPs. Along with other popular vehicular themed shows such as the Dukes of Hazzard, this show was packed with awesome car chases, action and just the right amount of drama and humor. Now after some years have passed since the second season was released on DVD, Warner Bros. has finally bought out the five disc ChiPs: The Complete Third Season which fans will absolutely love all 23 episodes while showing newcomers some motorcycle fun.

For those unfamiliar with the show, it stars Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox as California Highway Patrol (aka the CHP, with the “i” and “s” thrown in for fun) officers Jon Baker and Frank “Ponch” Poncherello. When the two aren’t joking around, meeting some ladies and such, they’re busy out on the highway chasing down bad guys or helping people in trouble with their cool motorcycles. Whether it’s stopping some roller skating bandits in the two part season premiere “Roller Disco”, or writing Erik Estrada’s real life stunt accident into the storyline that has Ponch helping out from a hospital bed, this collection of all 23 episodes from season three show off some of the best moments of the series.

I had a blast going back in time with this series. While it wouldn’t fit in with today’s modern television shows, it was cool watching this from a time where TV had outlandish plots and such, but they had a special kind of charm and were filled with fun. For a show that’s 30 plus years old, it looks surprisingly good here on DVD. Shown in a fullscreen format, everything comes in as well as can be expected, and there’s plenty of audio options on here that surprised the heck out of me, especially having a Japanese audio track featured here. No matter your preference, all of them come in nice and clear.

While I guess it was a miracle in itself that the third season was released, it would’ve been nice to have some special features to go along with this collection. I’m sure they could’ve thrown in some audio commentaries, interviews with the cast and crew, or something. But 23 episodes with multiple language tracks spread across five DVDs is more than enough to keep viewers entertained.

ChiPs: The Complete Third Season is an awesome motorcycle ride down memory lane with its awesome action and humor that never takes itself too seriously. If you’re looking for a fun show to just sit back and relax with, you’ll want to race on down to the store to pick this up along with the first two seasons for your collection. Just make sure you don’t race too fast, or you might find Ponch and Baker on your tail.
