I always find it amusing/entertaining when Japan takes subjects such as sports and games and places the anime spin on it which makes something that’s already intense even more so. Such is the case with Sentai’s Chihayafuru Season 3: Complete Collection that follows the fast-paced, card swiping action from the first two seasons and raises the stakes like never before.
Picking up not long after the events of the previous season, our heroine Chihaya Ayase is still playing the competitive Japanese card game Karuta after winning the national high school team tournament. Never one to rest on her laurels, she keeps honing her skills as do her teammates as they set their eyes on the ultimate prize, becoming a grand master.
As with any competition, it won’t be easy as she’ll have to push and swipe her way past some of the greatest Karuta players out there. Then there’s her teammates who also have to fight past their own challenges and struggles while Chihaya battles hers. Needless to say, the tension for these characters are at an all-time high, and if you’re a fan of the previous seasons and manga, this season will definitely have you glued to your seat until the last card is swiped away.
I had a good time with this season as it’s always fun to see the pressure constantly mount and to watch how your favorite characters go about overcoming it along with the various obstacles and opponents that get in their way. The visuals and audio are as sharp and clean as ever, which makes the card matches all the more intense, and the special features include clean opening and closing segments, some original Japanese promotional videos, TV commercials and some fun commercial bumpers.
If you loved the previous seasons, you’ll card flip over Chihayafuru Season 3: Complete Collection as it’s the most intense season yet. Chihaya and her friends go against some pretty impossible odds that will have you wrapped in suspense and sweat just as much as them. So pop this one on, break out the Karuta decks and get ready to be swept away just like the cards.
