Apparently the squeaky wheel does get the grease, as anyone who has read my reviews on Nickelodeon titles has noticed me going on and on about how I was hoping against hope their hit shows would come to Blu-ray. One of my wishes has been granted in the form of Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Complete Series coming to Blu-ray at long last, and it’s everything fans could want and then some.
Featuring over 24 hours of element-bending goodness, this set contains all three seasons of the hit series. For those who have never heard of the show or seen it, I’ll dip back into some of my review for the previously released DVD set. Show creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko bring us the story of Aang, a young boy who was trapped in an iceberg for a hundred years until being discovered and thawed out by a young brother and sister named Sokka and Katara. Turns out Aang is the Avatar, a being of great power who can control all four elements of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. Some chosen few are able to control one of the elements, or “bend” them into a combination of martial arts and their use called “bending”.
Aang is already an airbender, but now must learn how to bend the other three elements in his quest to become a complete Avatar while also saving the world and its people during his journey. It is here where the series really shines, as Aang and his friends meet both new friends and enemies along the way, each with their own backstory and reasons for doing what they do that makes for a fun and exciting show that will surely compel you to binge watch it until the end.
As with watching it originally on cable and the previous DVD set, I loved every moment seeing this beloved show all over again. While some may complain that it’s presented in it’s original 4:3 fullscreen format on Blu-ray, I’m just so happy that everything looks and sounds so clean and neat now. I would say the visuals and audio are even better than when it was aired on Nick HD a few years back. Also, all of the previous special features from the DVD set are back while looking and sounding better than ever. I like how the extras are tied into the appropriate season discs as well, as most of them are season/episode specific that go into all sorts of cool details about them behind the scenes, etc.
I could harp on all day and night about this show, but it’s best you go pick up Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Complete Series on Blu-ray and experience this amazing show for yourself if you haven’t already done so. I’m just so happy Nickelodeon finally gave us what we wanted with all of the sweet bells and whistles high definition brings, along with all of the previously released extras to boot. Here’s hoping their awesome TMNT series is next on the Blu-ray list.
