Seems like it was just yesterday when I saw the pilot episode of Starz long awaited series based on the classic Evil Dead films and wrote a small piece with my take on the show. Now that the series is gearing up for round two against all things evil, the first season finally makes its way to video with the Ash vs Evil Dead: The Complete First Season Blu-ray set. All ten frightfully funny episodes with some sweet special features are here on two discs of awesomeness that will have you hailing the king.
To continue from what I had posted last year about the series (which contains the overall plot, who the characters are, etc), I can see why the show was already greenlit for another season before this one even aired. It’s a scary, twisted but funny series that’s filled with dark creatures and even darker humor. Bruce Campbell returns to his iconic role as Ash as though he never left it, and the rest of the cast do an awesome job of backing up Ash or being sarcastic-laced villains for him to shred and/or use his boomstick on. Without giving too much away, some of the adventures contained here go from Ash taking a spirit walk to find his inner hero, or having an evil clone of himself trying to kill his friends, and of course trying to stop a demon apocalypse by the season’s end. As to be expected of the franchise, all of the episodes are filled with hilarious dialogue and plenty of practical effect-made gore that has our heroes covered in blood and other fluids more times than not.
Watching the series on Blu-ray makes the show even more groovy, as every one-liner and wisecrack along with all the gory details comes through crystal clear in high definition. These discs also come loaded with special features, with the best being audio commentary on every episode featuring some of the cast and crew. Take the pilot episode for example that has executive producers Sam and Ivan Raimi and Rob Tapert along with Bruce Campbell discussing how the show came to be after they noticed how much fans wanted to see Campbell return as Ash while they attended cons across the country. I found the commentary to be both interesting and awesome as it felt like you’re a fly on the wall listening to these guys having a candid talk, which is something that I love when these kind of special features are done right. Other extras include “Inside the World of Ash vs Evil Dead” that goes behind the scenes of the show with a look at what went into making every episode. “How to Kill a Deadite” has Bruce Campbell hilariously narrating through various kill scenes from the show on how to take down the monsters known as deadites that plague our heroes, and lastly “Best of Ash” features a few of Campbell’s best moments and one liners as Ash, all which will make you chuckle or just out right crack up.
Fans of the classic Evil Dead films and just dark but funny horror will want to rev up their chainsaw hand for Ash vs Evil Dead: The Complete First Season. Bruce Campbell returns as Ash as though he were fulfilling his destiny in life as he plays it to perfection, and the other cast members along with awesome practical effects round out the awesomeness of the show. So if you have the stomach for the gore and dark humor, you’ll want pick this up and have a groovy time as you hail the king and his boomstick.
