When I first learned about Sentai Filmworks’ Aoharu x Machinegun: Complete Collection set, I didn’t know what to make of an anime that has young people using airsoft guns to fight competitive battles. I can say however that as weird as it sounds, it makes for a fun and unique thirteen episode series that has something for everyone who gives it a shot (pun intended of course).

The plot follows a young lady named Hotaru Tachibana who is mistaken for a guy thanks to her tomboy-ish look and manner. She doesn’t let it faze her any and keeps on doing what she does until one day her friend is wronged by a guy at their school who is in a special club. When Hotaru goes there to make things right, she learns the club is one that uses airsoft guns to battle one another in competitive teams. After learning the hard way that Hotaru is pretty good at it, she’s invited to join the team and fight their way to become the best group out there. As with many school themed animes, you know there’s plenty of drama, action and adventures that happen along the way, both on and off the battlefield.

I had a good time watching the competitive madness unfold in this series, as it’s one of the best I’ve seen in awhile. While there’s plenty of similar animes out there that feature sports and give the same kind of feelings this one does, I like the fact they took something on the lines of paintball and turned it into a show. Since this series was just released recently, the visuals and audio are perfect in high definition and comes through lovely. To make things even better, there’s also some sweet special features here like a bonus OVA episode that’s perfect if you didn’t get enough of the series, and the textless opening and closing clips are included as well.

If you’re looking for something different in the competitive anime universe, you’ll be hard pressed to find something like Aoharu x Machinegun: Complete Collection. A cool cast of characters, intense gun battles, and plenty of drama make for a great show you’ll want to lock and load into your collection.
