I’ve been a fan of The Smurfs ever since I saw The Smurfs and the Magic Flute as a kid in the early 1980s. While there’s been plenty of Smurfs games released on all sorts of platforms, most of them have been duds until recently with hits such as Smurfs Kart and even last year’s The Smurfs 2: The Prisoner of the Green Stone. Now we have The Smurfs – Dreams which takes players on a Mario-like adventure that fans will go Smurf over.
The story is short and simple, the Smurfs infamous nemesis, the wizard Gargamel, has come up with his most evil plan yet to capture the Smurfs, by conjuring a magic spell that places all of Smurf village into a deep sleep. With all of the Smurfs out of commission, it falls on you, a Smurf that just happened to be away from the village, to save them and put a stop to Gargamel’s evil spell.
As soon as I started playing The Smurfs – Dreams, it reminded me a lot of the 3D Mario games, such as Odyssey and 3D World where you’re constantly on the move while collecting items and jumping your way through each stage. Speaking of which, each stage takes place inside of one of the Smurfs’ dreams. Inside them, you’ll have to collect Smurfberries, run, jump and dash your way levels, as well as solve puzzles to make it through them.
It wouldn’t be a great platformer game without some cool bosses thrown in, and this one takes some of the iconic characters from the Smurfs universe such as Bigmouth, twisted versions of some of the other Smurfs, and even Gargamel himself as a few of the bosses you’ll have to overcome.
Another thing that made me think of the Mario games while playing is the overall presentation, from the cutesy, colorful graphics and animations, to the cheery and sometimes ethereal music and sounds, this title feels like a nice homage to not only the 3D Mario games, but classic platformers such as Spyro the Dragon and others.
This game is also perfect for parents and their kids to play together as it features local co-op, making it easy to play and get through stages together. Some may complain this adventure is already too easy to begin with, but it’s clear this game is meant for kids to play along with other kids and/or their parents.
If you’re a fan of the Smurfs or are looking for a fun game anyone can play and enjoy, then look no further than The Smurfs – Dreams. It’s simple, cheerful fun that anyone can pick up and play and have a Smurf-tastic time with.
