Time sure does fly, as it felt like The Outer Worlds was just released not that long ago instead of nearly three years. Thanks to all of its sales and people enjoying it, famed game studio Obsidian was able to go back and make it even better with The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition, which is the best release of it yet, though not without its share of problems.
via YouTubeOur own Cory Galliher had a good time with the game back when it was first released and you can check out his review for all the plot details and more while I discuss this version. I was sent a PlayStation 5 code for review and the game looks and runs nice for the most part thanks to being upgraded to 4K with HDR and a buttery smooth 60fps from the original PS4 release.
The graphics and textures have been touched up some as well, as the character models and scenery look much better as though the game has been remastered. Combine this with HDR and some Ray-Tracing effects and it’s like you’re playing it again for the first time.
Also all of the DLC is included right off the bat, aka Peril On Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos. You can jump into those once you’ve met the requirements to do so, and this version even tells you how to go about unlocking said requirements that’s a welcomed addition. The PS5 version also takes advantage of the DualSense controller and its adaptive triggers where you feel the recoil from firing your weapons and how each gun feels different which is a very nice touch.
For those who couldn’t get enough of chasing down every little quest to level up and play around with your character build via the skill trees, Obsidian has raised the level cap so you can tinker with your skills even more to come up with the perfect build for your style of play.
As stated earlier, this enhanced version isn’t without its faults, mainly the framerate. While it held up pretty good for me while playing in “Performance Mode”, there were times when it would hitch and bog down unexpectedly, as though it’s not optimized correctly. It’s even worse should you decide to play in “Enhanced Mode” as the game looks even more beautiful but introduces even more hiccups in the framerate that goes all over the place, and other problems.
I’m glad I got the PS5 version as I’ve read these issues are even worse on the PC edition. Thankfully Obsidian is aware of these issues and are working on a patch, but it’s shame these are plaguing the release. Oh and I hope veterans of the game like starting from the beginning as there’s no option to transfer your save files from the previous release.
Besides these issues, The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition is still the best way to play and experience this new classic. I love all of the small yet largely impactful changes and upgrades here that make it feel like you’re playing an entirely different game. Here’s hoping the issues get patched soon so everyone can be the space faring adventurer they’re destined to be.
