When I first saw Rusty Rabbit and the cute but grizzled main character named Stamp, I didn’t know what to think. At first I thought it was going to be some Animal Crossing wannabe title, but was completely wrong once I saw him leaping into a mecha-like suit and drilling and dashing his way through levels.
After spending some time with it, I’ve learned that Stamp is anything but cute and will constantly remind you of it, but the main gameplay is just adorable and fun enough to keep action-adventure game lovers happy.
Taking place in a world where humans have mostly died off and left the Earth to rot, rabbits have taken over things for the most part, and some of them like our main hero Stamp are known as rust diggers, those who go out and rummage through junk that mankind left behind to sell or rebuild into other things they can use.
Stamp’s been working at this for quite some time, and it doesn’t take long for one of the many rust digger crews to come bother him, this group calling themselves the BBs. After declining to join their crew, Stamp continues his solo act of digging until he comes across a device that allows him to go through record logs of others that have been there previously, and learns his estranged daughter is one of them.
He sets out on a quest to catch up to her, but we all know it’s not going to be that easy as there’s plenty of monsters, enemies, and junk between Stamp and his goal. Looks like he just might need some help from the BBs sooner than later for sure. Once you get to play, fans of “Metroidvania” titles will feel right at home as you’ll run, jump, dash and drill your way through maze-like levels while fighting enemies, bosses, and your urge to collect all the junk and loot you can carry.
In true Metroidvania fashion, some of the stages are locked off until you acquire certain skills and upgrades to move forward, and you’ll earn experience points to level up and fill out the obligatory skill tree to increase your power and skills. You’re also able to sell junk you find and pick up much needed gear from a general store during your travels, as well as craft items, change your mech’s weapon loadout, and more.
The game looks and sounds great as the graphics are just enough to show off a cartoon-ish like world with fitting tunes to accompany you during your digs. I was surprised to learn that Gen Urobuchi of Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Psycho-Pass anime fame had written the story here, as it’s different from his usual fare to be sure.
Rusty Rabbit turned out to be a fun little action-adventure title that I had a good time with. If you’re into Metroidvania type games or just like a good action-adventure title, you’ll want to hop to it and pick up a copy and get to digging, you dig?
