I’ll admit, I’m one of the few people on the planet that hasn’t played Minecraft, but I’ve seen enough of it to know about it. At least Telltale Games makes it easy to jump into the action here without knowing about the famed game series or even the first season with Minecraft: Story Mode Season Two – Episode One: Hero in Residence. Those who enjoy the games and the previous season will love being back with Jessie and friends for even more adventures in this cube-shaped universe.

Picking up not long after the events of season one, Jesse and the gang have saved Beacontown and are trying to get back to their day to day lives. This being a Telltale adventure, it isn’t long before challenges appear in the form of nearby town called Champion City that’s led by the ruthless Stella, and Jessie getting a hand stuck in a magic gauntlet. This leads them on a quest to get it off and learn more about it, if Stella and other obstacles such as puzzles, quicktime events, and exploration parts don’t get in the way first.

Even without knowing a lot about Minecraft, I still had a good time making my way through this first episode. I can tell as I played that this series is geared toward younger players, as the quicktime events, exploration bits, and puzzles are a lot simpler and easy to work through than other Telltale adventures. As with all of their games, things tend to get so fun and interesting, that the episode seems to end just as soon as it began. Anyone who played the previous season will be happy to know your saves and choices made from that season will carry over into this one, and you can still select a gender for Jessie with the always fun Patton Oswalt voicing the male version.

Minecraft: Story Mode Season Two – Episode One: Hero in Residence is a nice start to this new season that previous season players will be happy to return to. Mixing everything that makes Telltale Games so great such as fun writing, voice acting, and of course plenty of adventure and choices to be made during the excitement, you’ll want to pick this one up and start building your way to greatness.
