I had a good feeling about Scott Magoon’s The Extincts when I first saw the covers to the first book and this sequel, The Extincts: Flight of the Mammoth, and I’m happy to say this one delivers just like the previous entry with plenty of action, adventure, humor and educational moments that’s fun for any reader.
via YouTubeOur anthropomorphic animal heroes, The Extincts, are back and still recovering from their previous adventure that turned everything they thought they knew upside down. In order to keep their missions going, they decide to open and run a zoo to raise the funds they need, and they also get a new member named Ursa, a bear.
All seems good at first, but Lug wants to get out there and do good the old fashioned way, by jumping into the middle of danger and saving others. After being nearly set on fire at the zoo by a visitor, he quits the team and decides to join a group of smokejumpers, firefighters that risk it all by skydiving into dangerous wildfires and putting a stop to them.
Just when it seems Lug is doing well and putting out fires, his team quickly learns someone is causing them and they’re getting worse with each wildfire. Turns out it’s someone from Lug’s past that’s behind these fires, and it’ll take his team and The Extincts to find and put a stop to this villain before the world goes up in smoke.
I didn’t want to spoil too much as I’ve seen some other book review sites do, so readers can actually enjoy learning about Lug’s past and the person from it. As with the first book, I had a good time with this one as it seemed to be a bit faster paced and went by quickly as I made my way through it.
Magoon’s nice artwork, educational and environmental messages, along with both serious and humorous writing returns in full force to keep you reading and finish the adventure in one sitting. It’s been awhile since I’ve read a series this fun and entertaining, and I can’t wait for the next adventure Scott has in store for these heroes.
If you’re a fan of the first book or just fun graphic novels in general, you’ll want to skydive into The Extincts: Flight of the Mammoth as it’s one of the most entertaining out there. I’m definitely looking forward to the next entry of Scott Magoon’s animal heroes that hopefully won’t go extinct anytime soon.
