Hard to believe it’s already been three years ago since author F.C. Yee brought us the awesome Avatar Kyoshi novels, and now Yee brings us a new avatar to follow the adventures of in Avatar The Last Airbender: The Dawn of Yangchen. Fans of the famed series and books will instantly love this new entry while still being accessible to those new to the franchise.
The story doesn’t waste any time introducing readers to Yangchen, the latest avatar who has been haunted by scary visions from her predecessors ever since she was little and continue to haunt her as a young adult. Her travels have brought her to the corrupt Earth kingdom city called Bin-Er where anything goes thanks to the evil shang merchants throughout the city.
Just when it looks like things can’t get any worse for Yangchen, she runs into a young informant of sorts named Kavik who tries to steal anything he can from her. Of course this turns out to be a big mistake as he quickly learns just how powerful an avatar is and decides to team up with her in hopes of finding ways to make enough money to escape the city with his family.
Meanwhile the corrupted merchants have had enough of following the Earth king and plan to acquire a secret weapon they can use to place them in charge along with any other evils they can think of. Naturally it falls on Yangchen and Kavik to stop them from getting the weapon, but this won’t be easy as Yangchen is constantly being plagued by her visions and other problems that she’ll have to overcome if the two heroes are to have a chance.
As with Yee’s previous books, I enjoyed reading this one as I’m a huge fan of this franchise and anything dealing with it is always a treat for me. Yangchen and Kavik are great characters and following them on this journey kept me reading constantly, especially as Yangchen deals with her visions and other problems that give a good look into an avatar’s life (lives) like never before.
Avatar The Last Airbender: The Dawn of Yangchen is another great book in the series that fans and newcomers alike will enjoy, thanks to it’s heroes and some interesting problems and issues it tackles, which makes waiting for the next entry even more difficult as you can’t wait to see what’s next.
