I remember when one of my close friends had seen John Wick when it was playing at the theaters and told me I had to see it. So taking his advice, I saw it as soon as it hit the home video market and I saw why he said what he did. It was one of the best action movies I had seen in a long time and is nearly perfectly executed with its time and sequences to boot. How could it get any better you ask? You release it on 4K UHD Blu-ray of course and get ready to see the action again for the first time.
One of the best things about the film is its simple story, John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is an ex-assassin that is pretty much like the boogeyman of the assassin world thanks to his flawless record. He just wants to keep to himself, raise a pet dog his love left him before she died and work on his sweet classic Mustang. Of course with this being an action movie, bad things have to happen as one day some Russian mob folks decide to mess with John’s dog and steal his car after an altercation they had earlier that day. Needless to say this forces Wick to come out of retirement and resurrect old demons within him to find and kill every last one of the mob guys. What follows is some of the best gunfights, car chases, and more you’ll ever see in a film.
As with John Wick himself, the movie doesn’t waste anytime as every action scene is a precise masterpiece. Everything from the brutal action sequences in which Wick kills off the baddies perfectly, to the minimal but effective dialogue, this is not only an action film for the ages, but a well crafted one. I could go on all day with how amazing the movie and its details are, but I’ll just move on to the visuals and audio which are also perfect. Thanks to 4K, every bloody scene comes through beautifully as well as the audio that makes sure every gunshot and explosion heard here has you ducking for cover in your home.
Once the smoke clears, you can take a look at the special features, starting with audio commentary with director Chad Stahelski and co-director David Leitch discussing how they went about making the perfect action film. “Calling in the Cavalry” has some of the crew talking about bringing the production together and what went into making it happen, “Don’t F–k With John Wick” is an aptly titled feature that goes behind some of the brutal action scenes of the film, and “The Assassin’s Code” goes into the rules and guidelines of the assassin’s circle that John is a part of. There’s a few other extras as well, but these are the few that stood out to me the most.
Again, I could talk about how awesome this movie is, but it’s best to experience it for yourself with the John Wick 4K UHD Blu-ray. Just in time to watch before the much anticipated sequel hits the theaters soon, you’ll want to take an action-packed ride on the dark side with this hit.
