Like most who have seen it, I became a fan of Guardians of the Galaxy as soon as I saw the trailer, and even more so after watching the film. As with the millions of fans all over the world, I waited for what seemed to be forever for a sequel, and of course I loved it in theaters just as much (if not more) than the first outing. Now the famed sequel comes home at long last in Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s first 4K release to boot with the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 4K UHD Blu-ray. Thanks to the dazzling details of the format along with beautiful HDR color and awesome Dolby audio helping to make a fun film even better, this might be the greatest, must own 4K (or any home format) release of the year.
While fellow movie critic Chris Pandolfi didn’t care much for the film, you can check out his plot details and more on his take of the theatrical release. Once you’re done, come on back here and sit for a spell as I go into my take on the movie as well as all the 4K goodness here. As with the first film as stated earlier, I loved seeing this both at the movies in IMAX 3D no less, and here at home in 4K. The chemistry between the cast members and the characters they play is amazing and is the main cause of why the series has become so popular. Well that and the always awesome retro soundtrack of classic rock and pop songs of the 60’s and 70’s. The special effects don’t hurt things either, as they’re some of the best I’ve seen in awhile, though like most comic book films it can get a bit CG heavy towards the climactic ending act. Even so, there’s no denying how fun and awesome this movie is, and seeing it 4K just makes things that much sweeter.
The visuals are super detailed, right down to the wood texture of Baby Groot and Rocket’s strands of fur, and the HDR colors make things pop out even more in this release. Then there’s the amazing Dolby audio that rocks you like a hurricane (sorry, had to sneak a classic song in there somewhere), as it makes sure you hear every joke, quip, and bass-filled action sequence perfectly. When you’ve come in for a landing after the adventure ends, there’s a nice amount of special features to sit through, starting with some tried and true audio commentary with the always fun writer/director James Gunn. If anyone has seen his interviews, you already know how funny and zany he is, and he brings these traits to the commentary as he guides viewers through some of the scenes, his creative decisions while making the film and more that makes for one of the best commentaries ever. “Bonus Round: The Making of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is four part documentary that goes into various production bits of the movie from the music, to the director and what he brings to the film, the cast and how they play off each other perfectly, and more. The now infamous music video for The Sneepers “Guardians Inferno” featuring David Hasselhoff is also included, and there’s some pretty sweet and interesting deleted scenes and a hilarious gag reel to round the extras out.
If this release being constantly sold out at Amazon doesn’t tell you how awesome the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 4K Blu-ray is, I don’t know what will. As with the first film, this one expands on the comedy, action, and sweet music that made it rock and takes it to awesome new levels. It truly is a movie that’ll make you laugh, cry (everyone who has seen it knows exactly what part I’m talking about), and love the action and characters (Baby Groot, nuff said). So hunt down a copy (good luck, you’ll need it) and prepare to be rocked by one of this year’s biggest and best releases.
