I’m one of the few people that came into Larry David’s hit show Curb Your Enthusiasm while it was well into its later seasons. Despite this, I’ve loved the show ever since I started and went back to the very beginning to catch up, including watching the comedy special that started it titled Larry David: Curb Your Enthusiasm. Much like Seinfeld which he helped write and create, this show is a comedic drug that demands to be taken regularly, and it was hard getting by the past few years when the show went into hiatus. Thank goodness it’s back in Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Complete Ninth Season. While I wish there was a Blu-ray release of this, the gang’s all here for more laughs and crazy satire that doesn’t miss a beat from the previous seasons.
Picking up not long after Larry causing trouble in NY last season and making his way back to LA after fleeing to Paris, he’s back in the saddle and up to his crazy ways of making something out of nothing. This season has him writing a comedy musical called “Fatwa!” that’s based on British-Indian novelist and essayist Salman Rushdie’s life. Of course this doesn’t sit well with the Ayatollah which Larry angers even more by promoting the musical on Jimmy Kimmel Live and doing impressions of him. Naturally this leads the Ayatollah to issue a fatwa on Larry, which causes him to go into hiding and wearing disguises. Throw in Larry dating one of Susie’s friends named Bridget (Lauren Graham) who has a son with Asperger’s which Larry doesn’t believe he has, and Larry’s friends that he either blows off and it bites him in the butt later, or some getting him into or out of trouble, and you have one of the funniest seasons since the previous ones.
What I love about this series so much is that most who watch can easily relate to Larry and his circumstances as well as how he reacts to them. Whether it’s getting mad at a soap dispenser that doesn’t work, to telling people how he really feels with no kind of filter for feelings, Larry is sure to make you either die laughing or sink into your chair in disbelief at what he does. Another great thing about the show is all of the amazing and hilarious guest stars it has, and this season is no different with the likes of Bryan Cranston that’s plays Larry’s therapist, and others like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Elizabeth Banks, Ed Begley, Jr., Jimmy Kimmel, Nick Offerman, Damon Wayans, Jr., Steven Weber and a few others that either play twisted versions of themselves or other crazy characters that will have you cracking up.
While I really wished this was a Blu-ray release (thankfully there’s a digital HD code that comes with it for download), this DVD set looks and sounds decent though watching it in high definition is the way to go. There’s also a small amount of special features in the form of some deleted scenes and a featurette that has some of the cast discussing their favorite and memorable moments of the show.
Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Complete Ninth Season doesn’t miss a beat after the hiatus and will leave you wanting more after it ends. It was fun watching Larry and the gang come back again and bring the laughs and satirical antics they’re known for. Let’s just hope we don’t have to wait another few years for season ten, as it needs to release pretty, pretty soon.
